The final show of the regular season was the icing on the cake for the Albion College varsity Hunt Seat team's successful season. Coach Randi Gardner and her students rode away as the champions of the entire region at the doubleheader hosted on home turf at the Held Equestrian Center on February 9-10.
The team members not only managed the horse show (with the help of the entire Equestrian Club plus some), but also rose to the occasion in the arena. On Saturday, the points accumulated quickly and by the end of the day the Britons were high point team champions. Sunday they came away in third place out of 12 teams, but the confirmation of the regional title overshadowed everything else.
Co-captains Miranda Voege and Heather Waldron proved they could perform under pressure all weekend. On Sunday, Waldron won both of her classes, qualified for regionals, and was named reserve high point rider. Voege, who has been a top contender for the coveted Cacchione Cup most of the season, is now tied for first place to win it. She will compete in a ride-off at the regional championships for the final award.
The regional championships are scheduled for Feb. 23 at the University of Michigan. Also by winning the region, the Britons have confirmed a team spot at the Zone 6 championships to be held on April 6 at West Virginia University.
