EAST LANSING, Mich. - Albion College sophomore Andrew Bill went up against Division I runners from Michigan State University and the Mid-American Conference in the Spartan Invitational Friday, and he did more than hold his own.
The Berkley, Mich., product was the 11th runner to complete the 8K course. He reached the finish line in 25:32.1. He was just three seconds off finishing in the top 10 in the race.
Coach Derick Lawrence was especially pleased with the team performance, noting the Britons average finish time for the five scoring runners (26:38.02) was better than two Division I teams (Eastern Michigan University and Valparaiso University) and six of the eight Division II teams in the event.
Albion's average time was boosted by sophomore Kiehl Smith, who achieved a personal record 26:42.3.
"It's always fun competing against Division I and II athletes and teams, which is quite unique in our sport, and the Spartan Invite had many of the best Division I and II athletes and teams in the state of Michigan and the entire nation," Lawrence said. "When combining team scores we would have placed sixth overall out of 27 teams, ahead of teams such as Hillsdale, Saginaw Valley State, Ferris State, Northwood, and Madonna. The same holds true when looking at the average times for each teams top five runners."
Albion will get its first look at its Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association rivals next Saturday, Sept. 23, when it travels to Holland, Mich., for the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Jamboree.
