ADRIAN, Mich. – Albion College's top seven runners – Andrew Bill, Kiehl Smith, Andrew Wittland, Trey Cucuro, Kurt Swaton, Zach Reynolds, and Adam Ditri – all set personal records as the Britons had what coach Derick Lawrence described as a phenomenal race in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Cross Country Championships.
With Bill finishing second in an Albion record time of 24:21.7, the Britons finished second to Calvin College.
Calvin finished with a total of22. Albion's total of 51 was 16 ahead of Trine University.
Albion ran in a tight pack with just 28 seconds separating the second through seventh runners. Smith finished 10th, reaching the finish in 25:05.2, and Wittland was two seconds behind him in 11th.
Then came Cucuro in 16th (25:23.3), Swaton in 19th (25:31.1), Reynolds in 20th (25:32.5) and Ditri in 21st (25:33.2).
In fact, Lawrence said Cucuro's time is the second-best ever by an Albion first-year runner, and the men achieved times that are among the 20 best in program history.
"The men played it smart the first half of the race," Lawrence said. "Our guys fought for every point."
Bill and Smith achieved all-MIAA first team status, and Cucuro and Wittland represented Albion on the second team.
Next up for Albion is the Great Lakes Regional meet on Nov. 11.
