Women's Lacrosse Nipped By Bulldogs

ALBION, Mich. – Emily Smith scored her third goal of the night with three seconds left to lift Adrian College to a 15-14 victory over Albion College in Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association women's lacrosse action at the Davis Athletic Complex.

Lauren Wiegand scored three times and Cait Gaitley buried a free position shot as Albion built a 4-1 lead 4 ½ minutes into the contest. Wiegand tacked on two more goals as Albion led 7-3 with 19 ½ minutes left in the first half.

Wiegand and Gaitley combined to score 11 of Albion's 14 goals and the offense bogged down once Adrian sent multiple defenders to slow their production.

When Albion did get a scoring chance, Adrian goalkeeper Cassie Vennkant stood tall with 14 saves, many on shots from close range.

Shannon Kahl, Taylor Nelson, and Marah Ranger also scored goals for Albion.

Annie Rice also scored three goals for Adrian. Ava Cares added two goals and an assist and Alex Branum, Mariessa Johnson and Annika Nuler all finished with two goals.

Albion (3-8 overall and 2-3 against MIAA rivals) will play at home for the final time this season at 3:30 p.m. Saturday against Trine University.
