UNION, N.J. – Kelsey Gustafson collected 21 kills and Taylor Rosenthal added 20 kills and four blocks as the Albion College volleyball team split Friday matches against Kean University and New Paltz (N.Y.).
Albion d. Kean 25-16, 28-26, 25-19
Albion hit .226 for the match, knocking down 41 kills in 115 attacks with 15 errors.
Rosenthal was especially effective, hitting .562 with 10 kills in 16 attacks. She added three block assists.
Gustafson hit .333 with a team-high 11 kills in 27 attacks.
Angela Adams served up an ace and Kayla O'Malley terminated consecutive points as Albion erased an early 4-0 deficit in the first set. O'Malley added three more kills as Albion built a 10-5 lead and never looked back.
Rosenthal assisted on a block and terminated the final point as Albion scored the key points in the second set.
Gustafson collected four kills late in the third set as Albion completed the sweep.
New Paltz d. Albion 10-25, 25-16, 26-24, 17-25, 15-12
New Paltz, picked as the favorite to win the State University of New York Athletic Conference, built a five-point lead in the fifth set and hung on for the victory. Trailing 14-9 in the fifth set, O'Malley and Rosenthal terminated consecutive points and New Paltz committed an attack error.
Gustafson and Rosenthal finished with 10 kills apiece.
Defensively, libero Monica Shuk collected 46 digs in the two matches to bring her collegiate total to 1,225.
Albion will play Saturday matches against New York University and Johnson & Wales (R.I.)
