As aspiring physician assistant who is a member of Albion College's Wilson Institute for Medicine, Justin Kapke, '21, is using his semester off campus to learn directly from healthcare providers in a clinical setting.
Through The Philadelphia Center, Kapke is shadowing physician assistants in the Methodist Hospital emergency department while also getting experience living in a metropolitan area.
"My internship mostly consists of shadowing PAs, but I am also doing some small projects for the volunteer office at the hospital," Kapke, an all-Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association first team performer for the Britons men's golf team in 2017, said. "Additionally, I am working on a project about care for patients that are experiencing opioid withdrawal using a technique called Medication Assisted Therapy.
"I have learned many things about healthcare that I otherwise wouldn't learn at school," he added. "This ranges from things like medications, procedures, patient communication, and healthcare policy."
Already a nationally certified emergency medical technician, Kapke is also enjoying the opportunity to live in an apartment.
"It is much different from living on campus and I have been cooking for myself a lot more. I am really enjoying it," Kapke said. "One challenge has been adjusting to life in a big city. I have never lived in or even visited any big cities besides Detroit and Ann Arbor, so living here was a change. The culture here is much different, it is more diverse and it is very fast-paced."
Joe and Julie Serra have given a $5 million leadership gift to launch a fundraising initiative to make two dreams a reality at Albion College. The first is a newly expanded fitness and student activity facility at the site of the current Dow Recreation and Wellness Center. The second is a new or renovated competition facility for the volleyball, men's basketball and women's basketball that currently call Kresge Gymnasium home.
The College is continuing to raise funds in support of both projects. To learn more, call 517/629-0446 or email firstname.lastname@example.org.
