Albion College, runner-up of the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association in women's tennis, was well represented when the all-league teams were released by the league publicist at the conclusion of the MIAA Tournament. Sarah Towler, a senior from Milan, was selected to receive the Sue Little Sportsmanship Award for the second consecutive year, sophomores Katie Blumberg and Marissa Cloutier achieved first team all-league status, and first-year player Irene Chen was placed on the second team.
Towler, the No. 2 doubles and No. 4 singles player, is the first two-time winner of the Sue Little Award since Calvin College's Jan Boerema gained the honor for the 1983 and 1984 seasons. A psychological science major at Albion, Towler becomes the third two-time winner since the award's inception in 1955. Little is a 1954 graduate of Albion. Blumberg, who prepped at Farmington High School, aced the competition at No. 2 singles by winning all eight of her matches against league rivals. Her overall singles record was 15-4. Blumberg joined Towler to post a 12-4 record at No. 2 doubles, including a 7-1 mark in regular season league matches.
A product of Grosse Ile, Cloutier posted a 7-1 mark against league rivals at the top of the Britons' singles lineup. She was 14-5 overall.
Chen, from Shenzen, China, and Apple Valley High School in Minnesota, played No. 3 singles and No. 1 doubles. Her 14-4 singles record included a 7-1 mark in regular season league matches.
Albion's Board of Trustees has approved fundraising for the second phase of athletic facility improvements, including the construction of a soccer/lacrosse competition facility, the relocation of softball's Dempsey Field, the reconfiguration of baseball's Frank Joranko Field, and the development of a centrally located plaza that will serve as a gathering space for players and fans.
