GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Anna Hargrove improved on her school record in the 50-yard freestyle and Amy Bell and Laura Steavenson scored seventh-place finishes in their respective events as Albion College is tied for fourth place after the first full day of competition in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Swimming & Diving Championships.
Hargrove sprinted to the wall in 24.16 seconds during the evening championship heat. She started the day with a preliminary time of 24.25.
Bell was seventh in 3-meter diving and Steavenson completed the 500 freestyle in 5:19.47, a little more than a second off her preliminary time of 5:18.07.
Coach Jake Taber said the Britons set a positive tone for the evening with a fourth-place time of 1:39.94 in the 200 freestyle relay. Alli Wilburn, Lauren Pawelec, Molly Blank and Lauren Cook were the team members.
Albion pocketed additional points in the 500 freestyle by placing Julie Okorn and Haley DeFeyter in the consolation heat. Cook was the runner-up in the consolation heat of the 200 individual medley and MacKenzie Chesley also swam in the race. Pawelec and Wilburn advanced to the consolation heat in the 50 freestyle.
Friday events include the 400 IM, 100 butterfly, 200 freestyle, 100 breaststroke, 100 backstroke, and women's 1-meter diving. The action begins at 10 a.m. with the preliminaries. See the MIAA Championships information page for the schedule and links to live results and video streaming.
