GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Anna Hargrove successfully defended her Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association championship in the 100-yard backstroke, but it wasn't easy.
The sophomore from Milan made up for a bad turn to reach the wall in 57.81 seconds for a four-hundredths of a second margin over Calvin's Erika Waugh.
"It was a gutsy swim," Albion Coach Jake Taber said. "The way it set up I think she's really happy with being able to get her hand on the wall first. It was a real nice out. She probably turned a pinch early coming into the wall at the 50. She didn't carry her speed into that wall as well as she typically does. She found a way to get off of it and battle back. She's gritty. She was able to handle that adversity pretty well."
Albion sits in fourth place in the team standings after two full days of competition in the league meet. The Britons have piled up 335 points to trail third-place Kalamazoo by 56.
The 400 individual medley produced 50 points as Julie Okorn and MacKenzie Chesley finished third and seventh, respectively, in the championship race. Lindy Williams was the first to the wall in the consolation heat, with Haley DeFeyter second, Nicole Manthei fifth and Tess Haadsma seventh.
Kelsey Shurmur was the other Briton to swim in a championship race Friday, placing seventh in the 100 butterfly, and Amy Bell secured an eigth-place finish in 1-meter diving.
Albion had the top three swimmers in the consolation heat of the 100 breaststroke in Lauren Pawelec, Kylene Slocum, and Claire Wittkowski and Alli Wilburn and Manthei also produced points by qualifying for the race.
Also in consolation races for the Britons on Friday: Laura Steavenson was first and Lauren Cook was sixth in the 200 freestyle, Jourden Burke was second and Claire Van Raaphorst was fourth in the 100 butterfly, and Burke was fifth in the 100 backstroke.
