GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Albion College sent two swimmers to championship races in the 200-yard backstroke and 200 butterfly on the final night of the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Championships.
Albion collected 482 points to finish fourth in the team standings. Calvin College and Hope College soared to the top of the ladder, scoring 805 and 768, respectively. Kalamazoo College was third at 551. Alma College was fifth at 409, followed by Olivet College with 248.
"We had contributions from all 18 swimmers," Albion Coach Jake Taber said. "We finished closer to third than we did to fifth. The future is bright."
Anna Hargrove and Jourden Burke finished fourth and eighth, respectively, in the backstroke. Julie Okorn and MacKenzie Chesley finished fifth and sixth, respectively, in the butterfly.
Senior Lindy Williams completed a fine collegiate career with a seventh-place finish in the 200 breaststroke and a sixth-place finish in the consolation heat of the 200 butterfly.
In other consolation races Saturday:
Lauren Cook was third, Laura Steavenson was fifth and Lauren Pawelec was sixth in the 100 freestyle.
Kylene Slocum was fourth, Claire Wittkowski sixth, and Nicole Manthei seventh in the 200 breaststroke.
Claire Van Raaphorst was second and Kelsey Shurmur third in the 200 butterfly.
In the 1,650 freestyle, Haley DeFeyter was 11th, Tess Haadsma 12th and Wittkowski 15th.
