Young Runners Make Statement

ALMA, Mich. – An Albion College men's cross country team with three first-year runners and two sophomores among the five scorers got the attention of its Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association rivals Saturday afternoon.

Competing in the league's jamboree meet at the Pine River Country Club, Albion finished second with a total of 72. The Britons finished 24 points lower than third-place Hope College.

Albion's top two runners, in fact, are first-year student-athletes. James Weekley, who prepped at Harrison High School, was the eighth runner to finish, completing the 8K course in 26:00.3. Andrew Bill, from Berkley, finished 11th in 26:11.7.

Adam Ditri, a first-year from Novi, and Mark Klingel, a sophomore from Brownstown Township, were separated by just a second. Ditri was 19th in 26:44.5, and Klingel was 20th in 26:45.2.

Alex Dermody (26:49.7) and Kiehl Smith (26:54.6) completed Albion's top seven.

Next up for the Britons is an Oct. 1 meet in Louisville, Ky.
