HOLLAND, Mich. - Albion College had more individual swims than any team assembled at the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Championship Friday night, and the scoring kept the Britons within striking distance of second place heading into the final day of competition.
Albion racked up 213 points Friday to move its fourth place total in the event to 411. The Britons trail second place Kalamazoo College by 47 points and third place Hope College by 15. Calvin College sits atop the standings with 571 points.
The most active women were senior Kylene Slocum, sophomore Anna Moore and first-year swimmers Alexandra Horman and Nicole McCann. The quartet started the night with a fourth place finish in the 200-yard medley relay, setting a time of 1:47.27.
In individual event finals:
- Horman and Moore finished fourth and fifth, respectively, in the 100 butterfly
- Slocum swam to fourth place in the 100 breaststroke
- Moore earned a bronze medal in the 100 backstroke, while McCann finished fifth
The Britons racked up 51 points alone in the 400 individual medley. Megan Harvey and Sarah Kilbride reached the championship final where they finished fourth and seventh, respectively. Katelyn Killewald, Natalie Nichols, Abigail Slager and Lauren Hall represented Albion in the consolation heat.
Hall and Nichols gained another consolation swim, adding to Albion's score in the 100 breaststoke.
Syriah Dobis, Julia DiFiore and Jessica Bush scored in the consolation race as Albion picked up 43 points in the 100 butterfly.
An additional 21 points came in the 200 freestyle where Camila Manrique gained seventh place in the championship final and Katie Ferrero reached the wall first in the consolation race.
Mary Noble joined Killewald and Bush in the consolation race as Albion gained 48 points in the 100 backstroke.
"Captains Molly Blank and Kylene Slocum led a productive team meeting, addressing the group about the energy," Head Coach Jake Taber said. "They relaxed and had fun. They made sure to take care of business the right way. We raced well and the women really came into their own. We are looking to sessions like that tomorrow."
Saturday events include the 1,650 freestyle, 200 backstroke, 100 freestyle, 200 breaststroke, 200 butterfly, the 400 freestyle relay and 1-meter diving.
