GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Albion College gained 28 points in the chase for second place in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Swimming and Diving Championship.
The Britons generated 281 points Friday to move with 44 points of Hope College in the standings. Calvin College is the leader with 681 points, followed by Hope (509) and Albion (465).
Head Coach Jake Taber said the Britons believed it was going to be a good day based on how the events lined up with the team's strength, and that was evident in the energy on the deck and in the pool.
"You could feel the energy the women had," Taber said. "They had great attitudes, they were excited to be here."
Taber said a third place finish by Anna Moore, Amanda Quitos, Sarah Kilbride and Rileigh Eding in the 200-yard medley relay and having five in the championship race of the 400 individual medley set the tone for the evening session.
Kilbride (third), Megan Harvey (fourth), Katelyn Killewald (sixth), Abigail Slager (seventh) and Kaitlind Hooper (eighth) scored in the IM. Lexie Seidel added points when she finished third in the consolation heat.
Albion had multiple swimmers advance to championship races throughout the session.
Alexandra Horman (fifth), Moore (seventh) and Tia Ulieme (eighth) represented Albion in the 100 butterfly.
Katy Henning (third), Hooper (sixth) and Quitos (eighth) scored in the 100 breaststroke.
Eding (second), Moore (sixth) and Nicole McCann (eighth) scored in the 100 backstroke.
Hannah Erickson (seventh) reached the championship race in the 200 freestyle, and she received support from consolation swimmers Katie Ferrero (ninth) and Camila Manrique (13th).
In other consolation swims, Henning (ninth), Alayna Hackman (11th) and Natalie Seifert (12th) scored in the 100 fly and Ulieme was 11th in the 100 backstroke.
