Bats go quiet in home opener

ALBION – In their home opener, the offense struggled as the Albion College softball team was swept by Defiance College. The Yellow Jackets edged out a pitcher's duel, 2-1, in the first game before taking a 5-0 win in the nightcap. 

Albion slips to 7-8 overall this season. 

Batting as the visitors, the Britons got on the board first in the top of the fourth inning. Courtney Ellis drove a deep ball to left center field, clearing the fence and smacking her first home run of the season. The solo shot put the Britons ahead, 1-0. 

Defiance used three hits to plate a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. A one out single from the Yellow Jackets gave them a 2-1 advantage, proving to be enough. 

Albion recorded just three hits in the loss, leaving three runners stranded. 

Ashley Pion (3-5) struck out eight over six innings of work. 

In the second game, the Briton bats were silenced, striking out 10 times in the contest. Albion's lone hit came off the bat of Lauren Creon.

Defiance scored three in the first and tacked on runs in the second and sixth. 

Gabrielle Hirkaway (3-2) took the loss in the circle. The sophomore allowed four earned runs, tossing six innings. 

The Brits are back on their home field on Thursday when they host another HCAC foe in Bluffton. First pitch is scheduled for 3 and 5 p.m.
