Fathman, Smith set school records at Wabash

CRAWFORDSVILLE, Ind. – Mattie Smith and Hannah Fathman had masterful weekends, as the Albion College swimming and diving teams competed at the Gail Pebworth Invitational, hosted by Wabash College. Smith broke the school record in the 200 yard IM and Fathman set new school marks in the 50 free, 100 free and 100 fly.

FRIDAY

Starting Friday night strong, the 200 free relay team placed second with a time of 1:37.51. Kaitlyn Kreb, Mattie Smith, Charlotte Nguyen and Hannah Fathman swam in the relay. The men's team of Kelvin Crone-Willis, Jalen Hung, Ethan Boersma and Billy Barr followed by taking eighth (1:27.86).

In the women's 500 yard free, Olivia Perfili and Emily Evers were within a second of each other, placing 12th and 13th overall – both clocking season-best times. Crone-Willis finished ninth in the men's event.

Smith shattered the school record, winning the 200 yard IM in 2:07.36. Fellow senior Alexis Glaser was 10th in the event. On the men's side, Hung was 12th with a time of 2:00.28.

Just hours after breaking the school record in the prelims, Fathman went on to re-break the record in the 50 free. Fathman won the event, clocking a 22.68. Albion won both the men's and women's event, with Barr taking the men's race in 20.69 – a season-best. Kreb, a freshman, took fifth in the women's event with a swim of 24.69.

SATURDAY

The 200 medley relay team of Alexis Glaser, Smith, Kreb and Fathman opened the night with a victory in 1:45.88. With a PR of 4:54.37, Evers claimed seventh in the 400 yard IM. On the men's side, Crone-Willis continued his spectacular weekend with a runner-up finish (4:09.85).

After breaking the school record in prelims (54.45), Fathman was first in the 100 yard fly. In the men's event, a 51.25 from Boersma earned him fourth. In the 200 free, Kreb placed eighth with a season-low time of 2:07.38.

Sarah Weissman scored a PR of 350.85 to place fourth in the 3-meter dive. On the 1-meter board, Jeremy Romero won the event, scoring a 418.25.

Smith's dominance continued into the 100 yard breaststroke, setting a meet record and winning the event with a 1:03.19.

The night concluded with the 100 yard backstroke. Senior Alexis Glaser took sixth (1:01.07).

SUNDAY

Fathman set yet another school record, this one coming in the 100 free with a time of 50.03 in prelims. In the finals, Fathman won with a race of 50.56 with a new meet record. On the men's side, Barr swam a 46.32 to take fourth.

Perfili was eighth in the 1650 free, clocking in with a time of 19:37.26. With a race of 16:48.83, Crone-Willis placed fourth in the men's event. After taking sixth in the 100 back, Alexis Glaser went on to take fifth in the 200 yard back (2:14.90).

Smith earned another victory, this one coming in the 200 yard breaststroke. The senior finished with a time of 2:20.54. With a race of 2:33.89, Evers took seventh.

In the 200 yard butterfly, Crone-Willis finished in 1:59.79 to finish fifth.

On the diving boards, sophomore Sarah Kohler took fourth in the 1-meter (384.57) and Weissman placed sixth (368.20). Megan Shay finished seventh (346.20). Romero won his second event of the weekend, claiming victory in the 3-meter dive with a 389.55.

Ending the meet was the 400 yard free relay where the women's team secured second. Kreb, Smith, Glaser and Fathman finished with a time of 3:37.79.

The team will host Hillsdale College on Jan. 18.
