THURSDAY RESULTS
HOLLAND, Mich. — Wen Wadsworth-Curcuru's eyes were transfixed on the Holland Aquatic Center diving scoreboard.
She had just attempted her sixth and final dive of the MIAA Championships' 3-meter competition — a 405C (inward 2.5 somersault tuck) with a 2.7 degree of difficulty.
The scoreboard read that she was awarded 40.5 points. Holding her hands on her head in disbelief, the seven-time MIAA Diver of the Week knew full well what she had just accomplished.
By just 0.4 points over Hope's Grace Dawson, Wadsworth-Curcuru became conference champion in the event with a score of 451.90. She was the first Briton to win it since diving coach
Emily Magyar did so in 2010.
"With the performance I had, I really wasn't expecting to get first," Wadsworth-Curcuru said. "When I realized I won, it was a really big surprise for me and an amazing moment."
She later joyfully embraced her teammates and Magyar with a grin from ear to ear.
"It's been an absolute joy working with her," Wadsworth-Curcuru, who is a Wayne State transfer, said about Magyar. "She's made my life so much better and brought my love of diving back. She's helped me grow to be more confident in my own abilities and trust myself with what I can do."
The win was the highlight in the Britons' fifth place standing (163 points) after Day 2 of the MIAA Championships — two points behind fourth-place Alma.
Hope (471) held a 122-point advantage over Calvin for the lead.
Two Britons swam in finals in the 500 freestyle.
