Cesar Maza

Cesar Maza

Cesar Maza was hired full-time as assistant coach in August of 2014. Maza came to Albion after spending three seasons as a student assistant for the volleyball program at Western Michigan University. He assists the program with game preparation, film analysis, practice planning, and recruitment. Maza also directs the program’s site camps and coordinates position practices for the Britons. He works extensively with the team’s defense.

In his second season at Albion, Maza helped the team improve from an overall record of 5-23 (2014) to 16-14 (2015), resulting in the Britons’ best overall record and conference finish since 2009. Three players received Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Player of the Week awards, with one named to the all-MIAA second team; the first time an Albion volleyball player has been named Player of the Week since 2009. The 2015 Britons also improved to 36th in team attacks/set and 24th in digs/set among all NCAA Division III schools with Maza guiding the Briton defense.

Prior to Albion, Maza attended Western Michigan University where he spent three years as a volunteer student assistant for the Western Michigan Broncos. His duties included replicating opponent tendencies during gameplay in practice, assisting during positional training, and providing film data for the staff.  Maza helped the Broncos qualify for the NCAA Tournament in 2011.

At WMU, Maza worked as a court director and coach at various camps including WMU Volleyball’s “site camps.” As a site camp coach, he traveled to various high schools around the state of Michigan to run camps through WMU Volleyball. Maza also has experience coaching at a number of other volleyball camps including camps at Michigan State and Ferris State University.

During his undergraduate studies, Maza spent two seasons at Plainwell High School as the junior varsity head coach. In his second season, Maza led the young Trojans to an undefeated conference record and conference tournament championship. His success at Plainwell led Maza to begin running private lessons with local athletes. The demand for lessons prompted him to begin running “open practices” for groups of high school players. Maza continues to run individual and group lessons. In 2014, following his departure of Plainwell, Maza helped his former players organize a used clothing and athletic equipment drive.

Maza is currently a head coach and lead coach with the Dead Frog- Far Out Volleyball Club. He has taken two teams to a top-15 finish at AAU Nationals. Maza has also won and placed at numerous other tournaments during his 3 years with the club. He has seen his former players move on to play at all levels of collegiate volleyball. A Chicago native and graduate of Glenbrook North High School in Northbrook, Illinois, Maza won 4 conference championships and several tournament titles playing for the Glenbrook North Spartans. He played USAV club volleyball at Rolling Thunder Volleyball Club out of Lake Zurich, Illinois. He graduated from Western Michigan in 2014 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Communication Studies.
