CHICAGO – Albion College swimming & diving coach Jake Taber said the distance group, particularly Julie Okorn, performed well on the opening day of the University of Chicago Invitational.
Okorn, a junior from West Bloomfield, lowered the school record while winning the 500-yard freestyle in 5:11.05. Her 1:00.48 butterfly leg in the 400 medley relay is also one of the best performances in school history.
Brad Melpolder swam to fourth place in the men's 500 free, touching the wall in 4:55.98.
In the sprint events, Brian Fiorillo completed the 50 freestyle with a fourth-place time of 21.80 seconds. He was three-hundredths of a second behind the third-place swimmer.
Lauren Rao added 14 points toward Albion's team score with a fifth-place finish in 3-meter diving.
Albion racked up 123 points on the first day of competition in women's events to rank fourth out of nine teams. The men are fifth with 106 points.
