Men's Swimming and Diving

Setting The Tone

JENISON, Mich. – Coach Jake Taber believes Albion's 800 freestyle relay teams set the tone for the weekend as three school records fell on the opening night of the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Swimming & Diving Championships.

Albion claimed the early lead in the men's standings as Brad Melpolder, Brian Fiorillo, Josh Boren, and Tom Parsons took first place with a NCAA Division III Championship 'B' qualifying time of 6:49.90. The Britons, who secured the school's first league title in a relay since 1971, beat Calvin College to the wall by three seconds. Melpolder's time is believed to be the second-best 200 yard time in school history.

In the women's relay, Albion's team of Julie Okorn, Anna Hargrove, Laura Steavenson, and Mackenzie Chesley finished third with a school-record time of 7:50.23. Okorn's 1:55.80 split for the 200 is a school record.

Qualifying in men's 1-meter diving was also conducted, and Paul Lewis and Phil Bommarito reached the finals. Lewis' score of 325.45 was fourth, and Bommarito is sixth at 262.25.
