Fiorillo Mines Gold at MIAA Meet

JENISON, Mich. – Albion College swimmers celebrated three event championships and school records in four events in Friday action at the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Swimming & Diving Championships.

"We did a nice job of racing tonight," Albion Coach Jake Taber said. "I'm pleased with the way we competed because we did a good job of holding our spots (from the morning preliminaries).

Brian Fiorillo picked up his second individual title of the meet when he beat teammate Brad Melpolder to the wall in the 200 freestyle. Fiorillo completed the race in 1:42.73, which was nearly five tenths of a second ahead of Melpolder.

Julie Okorn held off a challenge from Kalamazoo College swimmer Julie Seroka to win the 400 individual medley. Okorn's time of 4:34.41 was a school record and a 'B' qualifying time for the NCAA Division III Championships. Okorn established a school record of 4:38.22 in her morning preliminary swim.

Anna Hargrove capped the evening with a championship in the 100 backstroke. She reached the wall in a school record and NCAA 'B' cut time of 57.95 seconds.

The men's 200 medley relay team (Tom Parsons, Landon Lefler, Josh Boren, and Melpolder) also established a school record with a performance of 1:35.71 in finishing fifth.

The Albion men are in fourth place in the team standings. Albion's score received a boost from a fourth-place finish from Paul Lewis in 3-meter diving, a fifth-place finish from Garret Bosworth in the 400 IM (4:16.05), and an eighth-place finish form Lefler in the 100 breaststroke (59.56 seconds).

In consolation action Friday, Mackenzie Chesley was ninth in the 100 butterfly (1:02.54), Josh Boren was 11th in the men's 100 butterfly (53.01 seconds), Tom Parsons was 11th in the men's 200 freestyle (1:45.77), Laura Steavenson was 12th in the women's 200 freestyle (1:59.71), and Haley Defeyter and Lindy Williams finished 11th and 13th, respectively, in the women's 400 IM.

Albion had four women in action in the consolation race of the women's 100 breaststroke. Emily Pinter was 10th (1:10.35), while Claire Wittkowski was 12th, Alli Wilburn was 13th, and Williams was 15th.
