Box Score ALMA, Mich. – Albion College continued its flair for the dramatic Saturday afternoon.
Kyle Alsheskie scored with less than two minutes left in regulation to lift the Britons to a 1-0 victory over Alma College at Scotland Yard. The victory gives Albion its first 2-0 start against Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association rivals since 2006. Alsheskie scored in the first minute of overtime to send Albion to a 3-2 win over Olivet College in its MIAA opener.
The Britons had been pinned back on defense for much of the second half and Coach Jerry Block was pleased Alsheskie didn't miss the scoring chance. The Britons won the ball in the middle of the field and Bobby Budlong sent the pass to Alsheskie for the winning strike.
"Kyle hardly saw the ball in the second half and it would have been easy for him to flub the opportunity," Block said. "He has a special gift for scoring and we like our chances when he gets on the score sheet."
Albion took seven of its 10 shots in the contest in the first half.
Block said the wind played a role in the contest. Alma collected 15 shots in the second half, but only two were placed on goal. Goalkeeper Andrew Bobowski made five saves to complete Albion's first shutout of the season.
Block gave Man of the Match honors to Alsheskie, but he was quick to call out the defensive unit of Clayton Cole, Colin Howard, Charles Micunek and Andrew Prince for special recognition.
"The back four was under intense pressure in the second half," Block said. "I'm happy for them to keep a clean sheet."
Albion, winners of its last three to improve to 4-3 overall, has two road contests against MIAA rivals next week. The Britons travel to Kalamazoo College for a Tuesday night match and to Hope College next Saturday.
