HOLLAND, Mich. - Albion College advanced swimmers and divers to the finals of every event Saturday as it capped a successful run in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Championship with a fourth place finish.
"We had lots of opportunities to score," Head Coach Jake Taber said. "We just didn't score in bunches like other teams. Each day we were competing right there with them. I believe our time is coming. We will continue to improve."
Calvin College racked up 868 points to finish as the league champion. Albion was in a group of three teams tightly bunched with Hope College second (687), Kalamazoo College third (669) and the Britons at 627.
Anna Moore achieved Albion's highest individual finish, placing third in the 200-yard backstroke. Megan Harvey, who had a long day with a 10th place finish in the 1,650 freestyle, came in seventh. Abigail Slager (10th), Katelyn Killewalk (12th) and Julia DiFiore (14th) also scored in the event.
Kylene Slocum (fourth) and Sarah Kilbride (eighth) reached the championship race in the 200 breaststroke, and Katie Ferrero was fifth in the 1,650 freestyle.
First-year swimmers Alexandra Horman and Nicole McCann completed their debut seasons at the collegiate level. Horman was fifth in the 200 butterfly, while McCann finished seventh in the 100 freestyle.
In consolation races, Camila Manrique (12th) and Molly Blank (14th) appeared in the 100 freestyle, while DiFiore (11th), Syriah Dobis (14th) and Jessica Bush (15th) were in the 200 fly and Natalie Nichols (11th) and Lauren Hall (12th) were in the 200 breaststroke.
In diving, Marisa DeCamp was fourth and Lauren Young was sixth in the 1-meter competition.
