Swimmers retain possession of Union Jack Trophy

ALMA, Mich. – Working on short rest after competing against an Eastern Michigan University squad considered to be among the best of the mid-majors, Albion College responded nicely in defeating Alma College, 148-82, in a Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association swimming and diving dual meet.

Parker Belmore won three events – the 50- and 100-yard freestyle and 100 butterfly – and he would have had a fourth had Albion not entered its 400 freestyle relay as an exhibition.

Kurt Jolly achieved the fastest times in the backstroke events, though he was entered as an exhibition in the 200. He also joined Jake Huttenlocher, Ian Moran and Matt Hooper on the medley relay.

Huttenlocher was the first to finish the 200 breaststroke and 400 individual medley, though he swam the IM in an exhibition capacity.

With its 149-98 victory in the women's meet, Albion retained the Union Jack trophy for the fifth year in a row. The trophy is awarded to the team winning the combined men's and women's score.

Also, Coach Jake Taber said the Britons appreciated the support of the Briton men's basketball team who were on hand before a 3 o'clock game against the Scots.

"The men's basketball team was into the meet and both teams appreciated the support," Taber said.

Albion travels to Olivet College next Saturday for its final dual meet of the season.
