Albion rallies for women's swim/dive dual victory

ALBION, Mich. – Courtney Swingewood, Kaitlind Hooper and Katy Henning pushed Albion College into the lead by sweeping the top three places in the 200-yard breaststroke, and the 400 freestyle relay finished first in the final event of the night as the Britons rallied for a 124-103 victory over Kalamazoo College in a Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association women's swimming and diving dual meet.

Albion trailed, 96-95, after 3-meter diving.

Swingewood won the breaststroke in 2:37.35. She finished first in the 200 individual medley earlier in the meet, achieving a time of 2:18.60.

Hannah Erickson, Allison Dasky, Alexandra Horman and Rileigh Eding finished the freestyle relay in 3:39.66 for a three-second victory over the Hornets.

Albion collected 14 points in the 200 IM and 200 butterfly events. Amanda Quitos and Kaitlind Hooper were third and fourth, respectively, in the IM. Sarah Griffiths took the win in the butterfly in 2:12.73 and she was followed by Angela McCauley in third and Natalie Seifert in fourth.

Albion took the early lead in the meet as Nicole McCann, Katy Henning, Horman, and Dasky took first (4:07.28) and Emily Merucci, Hooper, Tia Ulieme and Erickson claimed second in the 400 medley relay.

Eding tacked on a first place finish in the 50 freestyle (24.79 seconds) with Dasky taking third.

The Britons didn't let Kalamazoo surge to a larger lead after 3-meter diving as it had the second (Samantha Swingewood), third (Alayna Hackman) and fourth (Merucci) swimmers in the 500 freestyle.

Albion is now 2-1 against MIAA rivals in dual meet competition. The Britons will take a break from dual meets until January.

Next up for the Britons is the important midseason invitational at Wabash College. It is a three-day meet running from Nov. 22-24.

Joe and Julie Serra have given a $5 million leadership gift to launch a fundraising initiative to make two dreams a reality at Albion College. The first is a newly expanded fitness and student activity facility at the site of the current Dow Recreation and Wellness Center. The second is a new or renovated competition facility for the volleyball, men's basketball and women's basketball teams that currently call Kresge Gymnasium home.

The College is continuing to raise funds in support of both projects. To learn more, call 517/629-0446 or email advancement@albion.edu
