Diver Justin Huttenlocher in 10th place after first day of regional

Freshman diver Justin Huttenlocher made an impressive debut in the NCAA Division III Region 1 Regional Diving Championship Friday in Granville, Ohio.

In the three-meter dive, Huttenlocher posted a combined score through 11 dives of 396 points, good for 10th place in a field of 21 divers. The one-meter board is set for Saturday and with a strong performance, he could qualify for the national championship March 18-21 in Greensboro, N.C.

"I'm definitely happy with how I did, but there is definitely eoom for improvment," Huttenlocher said. "I was proud of my twists, those are always my strongest. And it's always good to finish strong."

Albion assistant coach Robert Rariden said Huttenlocher was consistent throughout the competition Friday and is looking at the one-meter Saturday as a way of making up some points.

"I think he's pretty consistent at both but one meter is better for younger divers," he said. "He's great on both boards but I'd give him more of a shot at one meter."

Results of the three-meter competition and the one-meter are staggered so Huttenlocher has a chance to move up in the standings and, perhaps, grab a spot in the national championship.

"That's my goal," he said. "I set high standards but this is definitely a learning experience. It will be a lot of fun."
