KALAMAZOO, Mich. -- One week after an ugly loss, the Albion College football team responded in a thunderous way, cruising to a 49-0 win over Kalamazoo College.
Jack Bush set a new career-high, throwing five touchdowns on an incredibly efficient day.
KEY STATS
Bush was 21 of 28 for 240 yards. Freshman quarterback
Luke Lovell added a stout 9 of 11 mark for 113 yards.
Justin Thomas continued his storied season, hauling in three touchdown passes. Brother
Kyle Thomas recorded a career-high 100 receiving yards, adding a touchdown.
Defensively, the Britons held Kalamazoo to just 149 yards of total offense to spoil the Kalamazoo Homecoming. On the other side, the Brits racked up 498 yards of total offense.
HOW IT HAPPENED
On their second drive of the game, Albion used a short field to take an early 7-0 lead.
Bush connected with
Justin Thomas for an 8-yard touchdown strike, his first of the afternoon. A
Jackson Cooney PAT brought the score to 7-0 just six minutes into the contest.
On the second play of the ensuing drive,
Drew Shafer stepped in front of a Hornet pass, his third pick of the year, giving the ball right back to the Britons. The visitors capitalized on the turnover, as Bush found
Kyle Thomas three plays later for a TD. Another Cooney PAT pushed the lead to 14-0.
The Brits tacked on a third touchdown before the end of the first quarter. Another Bush to
Justin Thomas completion coupled with a PAT from Cooney gave the visitors a 21-0 lead after one.
With 2:37 before the half, the Brits capped off a 9-play, 73-yard drive with the third touchdown pass from Bush to
Justin Thomas. With time still on the clock, Albion added another score -- this time a 23-yarder from Bush to
Mark Tocco. The TD inflated the lead to 35-0 at the half.
Early in the third, Kalamazoo had the ball at their own eight. A big play by
Eddie Longmire pinned the Hornets at their own one, turning the ball over on downs. Two plays later,
Ryan Roberts powered his way into the end zone to extend the lead to 42-0.
Albion's final score came late in the fourth, courtesy of a 10-yard rush by
Colby Taylor-Browning.
"Today was a great team win," said head coach
Dustin Beurer. "We put together three phases and had a 'whatever it takes' mentality. When we respect what it takes to win and the preparation and the process that goes into putting ourselves in that position, we are capable of favorable results."
The Britons improve to 5-1 overall, 1-1 in the MIAA.
Albion is back on their home turf next week for Homecoming. The Brits host Olivet for a 1 p.m. kickoff.
