Swim and dive celebrates seniors, defeats Aquinas

ALBION – The Albion College swimming and diving team sent their seniors out in a big way, defeating Aquinas on Saturday afternoon. The women won, 193-47, while the men picked up a 173-57 win. 

Opening the day with sweeps in the 200 yard medley relay, the men's team of Cole Nelson, Declan Tharp, Nate Cobb and Brendan Ritchie won the event with a time of 1:39.29. On the women's side, the quartet of Sarah Griffiths, Mattie Smith, Sage Gettings and Hannah Fathman won with a time of 1:49.23.

Senior Drew Fogell won the 200 yard free, clocking in at 1:46.57. Bryn Cavanaugh won the women's event with a time of 2:04.52.

In the 100 yard backstroke, Declan Tharp's time of 56.23 won him the event. Amani Lopez-Dunlap's time of 1:10.09 earned her a win on the women's side. 

Andrew Jonna edged out an Aquinas swimmer by .34 to win the 100 yard breaststroke (1:02.65). Alexis Glaser also earned a victory in the event, touching the wall at 1:13.01.

With a time of 2:01.78, AJ Zako won the 200 yard butterfly. Samantha Swingewood also won, coming in at 2:09.22. She later went on to win the 200 yard backstroke as well. 

Albion dominated the 50 yard free, with wins by Matthew Jacox (23.13) and Hannah Fathman (24.29). Jacox went on to win the 100 yard free as well.

Justin Huttenlocher (286.00), Madeleine Rais (172.65) and Sarah Stone (134.70) all scored in the 1-meter dive. The trio also scored in the 3-meter dive. 

Senior Emily Merucci won the 100 yard free with a time of 56.76.

A time of 2:01.61 earned Kelvin Crone-Willins a win in the 200 yard backstroke. 

Connor Robertson continued his dominance in the breaststroke, winning the 200 yard event with a time of 2:17.46. On the women's side, freshman Mattie Smith won with a time of 2:28.12.

In the 500 yard free, Tommy Trueax won with a time of 5:06.11. Emma Henninges also won, touching the wall at 5:47.81.

Also winning both genders of the 100 butterfly, Cobb and Fathman secured victories for Albion. 

Prior to the meet, Albion honored its 14 seniors -- Samantha Swingewood, Courtney Swingewood, Erin Lathrop, Emily Merucci, Elizabeth Cavataio, Ashley Ketchum, Noah Mitchell, Connor Robertson, Drew Fogel, Anthony Hopkins, Matthew Jacox, Tommy Trueax, Erik Halboth and Andrew Jonna

The Britons return to MIAA action on Saturday when they travel to Hope College. The meet is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
