Swim and dive falls to nationally-ranked Hope

HOLLAND, Mich. – Back in MIAA action, the Albion College swimming and diving teams came up short at nationally-ranked Hope College. The men's team fell 186-102 while the women dropped their contest, 188-110. 

The Britons received first place finishes in the 100 yard breaststroke by Declan Tharp (59.78) and Mattie Smith (1:06.13). Tharp later went on to win the 100 yard fly as well and Smith won the 200 yard breaststroke. 

Connor Robertson won the 100 yard backstroke with a time of 55.27.

Albion also got two winning finishes in the 50 yard free, courtesy of Brendan Ritchie (22.14) and Hannah Fathman (23.79). Fathman, a freshman, also was victorious in the 100 yard butterfly. 

Justin Huttenlocher – the reigning MIAA Diver of the Week – won both the 1-meter and 3-meter dives with scores of 280.00 and 272.75.

Sophomore Sage Gettings won the 100 yard free with a time of 53.89.  Samantha Swingewood added a third place finish in the same event.

Swingewood and Sarah Griffiths went 1-2 in the 200 yard fly, while Drew Fogel placed second on the men's side. 

Russell Brown's time of 17:00.52 earned him a second place finish in the 1650 free.

Senior Tommy Truax took third in the 200 and 100 yard freestyles. Also in the 200 yard free, fellow senior Emily Merucci ended in second. 

Alexis Glaser was third in the 200 yard breaststroke. 

In the 200 yard backstroke, Albion received top-three finishes from Robertson (3) and Griffiths (2).

Both AJ Zako and Bryn Cavanaugh were third in the 500 yard free. 

Both the men's and women's teams took second in the 400 yard medley relay. The men;s team was composed of Cole Nelson, Andrew Jonna, Tharp and Truax while the women's team was Griffiths, Smith, Gettings and Fathman. 

Nate Cobb took second in the 200 yard IM. Swingewood placed in the same spot on the women's side. 

Tharp, Nelson, Truax and Ritchie later went on to finish third in the 200 yard free relay. The women had teams place second and third. 

Albion returns to the pool on Feb. 5 at Olivet. The meet will begin at 1 p.m.
