Brownell era begins with two wins

ALBION — The Rob Brownell era starts with two wins. 

In the first dual meet under the direction of the newly appointed head coach, both the Albion College men's and women's swimming and diving teams came away with wins over Kalamazoo College. The men won 133-110 and the women gritted out a 120-118 win. 

Starting the night out strong, the 200 medley relay team of Lauren Bailey, Mattie Smith, Sage Gettings and Hannah Fathman won with a time of 1:51.06. The men's team also won with a time of 1:38.41. The team was composed of Richard Pifer, Declan Tharp, Nate Cobb and Billy Barr

Sophomore Olivia Perfili was third in the 1000 yard free, clocking in at 12:28.14. On the men's side, another sophomore – Kelvin Crone-Willis – won the event with a time of 10:37.65.

Bryn Cavanaugh's time of 2:05.13 won her the 200 free. AJ Zako added a win on the men's team with a time of 1:51.63.

Fathman picked up right where she left off, winning the 50 free (24.74). Gettings was just behind her with a time of 24.84. For the men, Barr's time of 21.53 was good for first. 

Fathman later went on to win the 100 free with a race of 53.68. Barr was also the winner on the men's side (49.18).

With a time of 2:16.91, Smith won the 200 yard IM. Classmate Alexis Glaser was third (2:29.23). A 2:02.20 was good for first place, as Cobb won the men's event. 

Reigning MIAA Diver of the Year, Justin Huttenlocher, won the 1M (267.95) and 3M (253.55) dives. 

Gettings and Declan Tharp continued their dominance from last season in the butterfly. They both won the 100 yard fly, as Gettings finished in 57.22 and Tharp was a quick 52.34. Zako placed second for the Britons.

Pifer's time of 58.81 earned him third in the 100 yard backstroke. 

In the 500 yard free, Cavanaugh won with a time of 5:42.29. Freshman Jalen Hung took third, coming in at 5:14.18.

Smith won the 100 yard breaststroke with a time of 1:08.28 while Glaser finished third. For the men, Tharp won the event as well. 

The night ended with the 200 free relay teams. The women finished second (Cavanaugh, Mikala Muccino, Emily Evers, Alyvia Martinez) and the men also finished in the same spot (Cobb, Canon Rose, Nick Johns, Pifer). 

Albion will compete at the MIAA Relays next Friday, hosted by Calvin University.
