Game Recap: Football |

Football falls in MIAA Championship Game

ALMA, Mich. — It came down to the wire, but in the end, the Albion College football team fell in the MIAA Championship game to Alma College, 34-31. Driving late, the Britons had a chance to tie or take the lead, but turned the ball over before they could do so.

Albion committed four turnovers in the game — compared to Alma's none. The Scots also racked up 450 yards of offense.

Brendan Teal was unguardable. The junior finished with eight catches for 148 yards and two touchdowns. Bailey Edwards caught six for 83 yards as well.

Defensively, the Britons were led by Jeremiah Major's 16 tackles and 12 from Stephen Douglas.

After an Albion turnover, the Scots immediately got on the board with an early touchdown. Midway through the first quarter, Luke Lovell connected with Edwards for a 37-yard catch and run TD to knot the game at seven.

Late in the period, Teal hauled in a beautiful over the shoulder catch for 59 yards, putting the Britons up 13-7. Logan Grwinski's PAT gave the visitors a seven point lead at the end of one.

Alma tied the score at 14 to start the second quarter. As the game continued to be back and forth, the Britons were able to take a slim 21-14 lead into the half. Another Teal touchdown – this time in the corner of the end zone – put Albion ahead at the break.

With the ball to start the new half, Alma tied the game at 21 on their first drive. The Scots then forced a three and out and took the lead on the ensuing possession. A 41-yard field goal from Grwinski cut the Alma lead to 28-24, setting up a dramatic finish.

Alma extended its lead to 10 points, but a missed PAT opened the door for the Britons. A touchdown from Andy Durand put them to within three, but could not complete the comeback.

The loss most likely ends Albion's season at 9-1. Though a long shot, there is a small chance the Britons could receive an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament. The playoff field gets announced tomorrow.
