Swim and dive splits with Alma, Hope

HOLLAND, Mich. – In a tri-meet Friday night, the Albion College swim and dive teams each split their matchups with Hope and Alma. Both teams defeated Alma College, but fell to the Flying Dutch of Hope.

Sophomore Mattie Smith continued her incredible season, winning the 200 free and the 500 free. Smith swam a 2:00.88 in the 200 and then a 5:34.93 in the 500.

In the 50 yard free, Albion got wins from both teams. Declan Tharp (22.01) won the men's race, as Hannah Fathman (23.95) won the women's race.

Both 200 medley relay teams placed third. The men's team clocked in at 1:40.74, made up of Brendan Ritchie, Andrew Woods, Billy Barr and Evan Steele. With a time of 2:01.96, the team of Emma Frame, Emily Evers, Chalondra Jewell and Hannah Fathman represented the women's team.

Sage Gettings won the 100 yard backstroke, clocking in at 1:01.03. She was also part of three Britons to finish in the top three slots in the 1000 free. Gettings was third, coming in at 11:34.73. For the men, Brennen Curry and Andrew Woods took second and third.

Barr's time of 1:51.53 earned him third in the 200 free.

In the 200 IM, Katie Flynn (2:39.00) was fifth and Ritchie (2:09.90) was fourth.

With a time of 48.80, Nate Cobb placed second in the 100 free. Bryn Cavanaugh was fourth on the women's side with a time of 59.61. Cavanaugh was also third in the 100 fly, as Richard Pifer led the men's squad with a fifth place finish.

Freshman Jalen Hung took fifth in the 100 yard breaststroke.

Jeremy Romero was second in both the 1-meter and 3-meter dives.

The night wrapped up with the 400 free relay teams. The women (Smith, Bailey, Gettings, Fathman) placed second as the men (Tharp, Johns, Hung, Woods) finished third.

The scores shook out as follows:

MEN: Hope 169, Albion 64 …. Albion 134, Alma 86
WOMEN: Hope 163, Albion 76 …. Albion 115, Alma 99

Both teams will compete at the Wabash Invitational next weekend.
