Game Recap: Baseball |

Baseball sweeps in wild twinbill

AUBURNDALE, Fla. — That Florida air sure is magic.

A seventh inning comeback and a walkoff win in extras helped the Albion College baseball team sweep John Carroll University. Originally scheduled for two seven inning affairs, the Brits ended up playing 18 innings, winning both in dramatic fashion.

Brayden Raether earned both wins in relief, having two stellar outings on the bump. In the nightcap, freshman Ryker Mazey lined a walkoff single up the middle for a 6-5 win.

GAME ONE: Albion 5 John Carroll 4 (8 innings)

It was a much-needed, come from behind win for the Britons in the opener, using the long ball to tie the game in the top of the seventh.

John Carroll scored first in the bottom of the second on an infield single. Matt McGann tied the game in the fourth with a no-doubt home run to left to lead off the inning.

The Blue Streaks would go on to regain the lead in the bottom of the fifth with one run. They would tack on a pair in the home half of the sixth, taking a 4-1 lead into the seventh with Albion down to their final three outs.

Sean Haddlesey led off the seventh by smacking an opposite field single. One batter later, Zac Gray crushed a two-run home run to left, putting the Britons down by one.

Two pitches later, Justin Charron tied the game with an absolute missle to left. The senior's first homer of the season could not have come at a better time, tying the game at four.

John Carroll got the leadoff man aboard in the bottom of the frame. With the winning run 90 feet away, freshman Brayden Raether continued his impressive Florida campaign, getting the JCU hitter to foul out to Charron at first and send the game into extras.

Patrick Merolla walked to lead off the eighth and moved to third on another Haddlesey base hit. Gray sent a grounder to the third baseman. With Merolla off on contact, the John Carroll third baseman opted to throw home. Merolla slid under the tag, giving Albion a 5-4 lead.

In the bottom of the eighth, Raether struck out the first two Blue Streak hitters. After a single and an error, Raether punched out the next batter looking, securing the second win of the trip for the Brits.

Both Haddlesey (2) and Gray (3) had multi-hit games in the contest. Gray accounted for three RBI.

Scotty Clippert pitched a solid four innings on the bump. The sophomore allowed just two hits and one run. Raether added two scoreless innings, fanning three and walking none.

GAME TWO: Albion 6 John Carroll 5 (10 innings)

Similar to game one, the Blue Streaks drew first blood in the nightcap, scoring on a groundout in the first inning. Albion immediately answered in the bottom of the frame. Haddlesey and Gray kept swinging hot bats at the top of the lineup, putting runners at second and third to lead off the contest. Albion would only be able to cash in one run on a fielder's choice, tying the game at one.

Sophomore Gabe Mata laced a two-out single to right. After swiping second, Mata came around to score on a two-bagger from Haddlesey.

John Carroll would take a 3-2 lead in the third, but once again the Brits had an answer. Braeden Emery smoked a two-run homer to left center, giving Albion a 4-3 lead through three. The marathon would continue in the fifth, as the Blue Streaks would find a way to tie the game.

The trading of runs would continue through the sixth, as a Blue Streak run was answered by the Brits in the sixth. Sawyer Shotwell pinch hit and reached on an error. After moving to second on a passed ball, the freshman advanced to third on a beautiful sac bunt by Mata.

Haddlesey stepped up doing senior things – roping a single to left to drive in Shotwell and tie the game at five.

In the tenth, Austyn Stephens struck out, but reached first on a wild pitch. The freshman moved into scoring position on a beautiful sac bunt by Emery, setting up Mazey's heroics. Mazey lined a single past a diving second baseman for an Albion win.

Throwing 4.1 innings in relief, Raether earned the win – his third of the week. The freshman struck out six while allowing just three hits and walking none.

Junior Pete Loch went 4.1, striking out four for the Brits.

Head coach Scott Carden now sits at 299 career wins.
