Baseball claims season series with Olivet

OLIVET, Mich. – Despite a tough ending to the day, the Albion College baseball team won another conference series, splitting with Olivet College. Albion used late heroics to win a 5-4 opener before dropping the nightcap off an unearned run, 8-7.

Coupled with an 11-7 win on Apr. 7, the Britons win the series against the Comets. It is the seventh consecutive series win over Olivet.

GAME ONE: Albion 5 Olivet 4 (7 innings)

A pair of dominant freshmen on the mound and some late inning fireworks were the key for Albion in game one. Sean Cooper turned in a quality start, tossing six innings, allowing just two earned runs while striking out six. Behind him, Brayden Raether earned the win, throwing a scoreless 1-2-3 inning.

Junior Zac Gray roped a line drive over the centerfielder in the top of the first. A weak cutoff throw allowed Gray to scamper home for an inside the park home run and a 1-0 Albion lead.

In the bottom of the first, Olivet immediately answered, capitalizing on Albion errors and plating a pair of unearned runs. The Comets struck for two more in the third, holding a 4-1 edge after three.

Albion closed the gap to one in the top of the sixth. McGann and Mark Lauro reached with one out. After a fielding error by the Comets, the bases were loaded for pinch hitter Ethan Caris. The freshman grounded into an RBI fielder's choice, putting Albion within one.

Two batters later, Ryker Mazey easily scored on a wild pitch, cutting the deficit to one.

Gray put together a seven pitch at bat before lining a single up the middle in the top of the seventh. Down to their final out with the go-ahead run at the dish, McGann belted a two-run homer to left, vaulting Albion ahead, 5-4.

Raether retired the side in order for the victory in the opener.

GAME TWO: Olivet 8 Albion 7

A four run lead slipped away from the Britons in the nightcap, committing three errors in the loss.

In the third, Chris Marshall was hit by a pitch and Sean Haddlesey singled. With two away, Gray's hot bat continued with a single to left, driving home Marshall for the first run of the game.

Albion tacked on three more in the top of the fourth. McGann was plunked and Mark Lauro laced a single to right. With two away, Caris delivered the biggest hit of his freshman campaign, doubling home both runners. Marshall followed it up with a RBI single up the middle, giving the Britons a 4-0 lead.

A three-run jack by the Comets in the bottom of the inning cut Albion's lead to one run.

Olivet took a 5-4 lead in the fifth off a pair of unearned runs. After Olivet tacked on two more, the Britons found themselves in a 7-4 hole with three outs to play.

Gray and McGann both singled, putting the tying run at the plate. With two outs, Lauro crushed a game-tying home run to right, knotting the game at seven.

In the bottom of the ninth, Comets ended any hopes for a season sweep with a walk off win on an unearned run.

Albion wins their third MIAA series, improving to 6-5 in the conference and 11-15 overall. With nine and a half games remaining, the Brits currently sit third in the conference.

On Thursday, Albion will complete Friday's game with Adrian. It is currently a 3-3 game in the top of the fourth with a runner on first and an 0-2 count. The game will resume in Albion at 2 p.m.
