Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Seven straight wins for women's lacrosse

ALBION – Chrystelle Lopez has scored 190 goals in her career, and her 190th may have been the most important.

With the game tied at 10 and under two minutes to play, the senior connected on a free position goal, lifting the Albion College women's lacrosse team to an 11-10 win over St. Mary's College.

Lopez led the charge with two goals and three assists. Once again, Alexis Robinson was stellar between the pipes, making 19 tremendous saves in the win.

Albion has now won seven straight, dating back to Mar. 16. The Britons improve to 11-2 overall, 4-0 in the MIAA.

Albion held all of the momentum in the early goings, jumping out to a quick 3-0 lead. Midway through the first quarter, junior Angelina Mendieta broke a scoreless tie with her second goal of the season. Less than a minute later, Destiny Okon scored her first of three goals with a free position goal.

With 6:47 left in the first, Abby Sheklow found Addie Pastor for a goal, pushing the hosts up by three goals. The Belles got on the scoreboard late in the period, but Albion held a 3-1 lead after one.

Less than three minutes into the second period, Albion got goals from Lopez and Pastor, pushing the advantage to four. Despite a goal from the Belles, Dameron tallied her second goal of the evening while falling backwards. With 1:12 to play before the break, Okon scored off a pass from Lopez for a 7-2 lead at halftime.

In the third quarter, St. Mary's began to find its groove, outscoring Albion 3-1 in the period. The only Briton goal came from Okon, as Albion led 8-5 heading into the final quarter.

St. Mary's began their push for a comeback, closing the gap to 9-7. Following a Pastor goal, St. Mary's scored three times in a 75 second span to tie the game at 10 and set up a dramatic finish.

With 1:56 remaining, Lopez was awarded her free position attempt where she rifled one past the St. Mary's goalie. A yellow card given to the Belles allowed the Britons to maintain possession following the goal, where they successfully kept the ball in their offensive third.

The Belles outshot Albion, 33-22. Albion was efficient on the clear, converting 20 of 25 attempts.

Lopez caused three turnovers while controlling five draws. Okon controlled five draws as well for Albion.

Albion will play their fourth game in eight days on Saturday when they travel to Kalamazoo College. Game time against the Hornets will be at 4 p.m.
