Pion sets new single season strikeout record

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – In their final games of the season, Ashley Pion shattered last season's single season strikeout record, as the Albion College softball team was swept by St. Mary's College. Pion fanned eight on the day, bringing her season total to 147 and setting a new Albion record – breaking her own from a season ago.

Another tight pitcher's duel ruled the scorebook in game one, with the Belles prevailing 3-0. A 2-run blast by St. Mary's put the hosts ahead 2-0 after three innings. St. Mary's tacked on an unearned insurance run in the sixth, as Albion's offense struggled to produce.

Megan Maiuri and Kenadie Baareman both recorded two hits in the contest.

As a team, the Britons stranded seven runners, including a pair at second and third in the first.

Neither pitcher issued a free pass in the game.

In the second game, batting as the away team, St. Mary's took a 2-0 lead early on. The big blast came from the long ball – as a three run homer in the third helped the Belles pull ahead, 7-0. STM took game two to complete the sweep by a 7-2 margin.

Parker Douglass hit a one-out single in the bottom of the third before being lifted for pinch runner Rachel Horecki. Shanyn Jewell followed with a bloop single to center, with two on for the top of the lineup. Mairui lined an RBI single to right, driving in Horecki and cutting the lead to 7-1.

In the bottom of the fifth, Albion scored another run, thanks to Jewell. The junior cranked a solo shot to deep left, cutting the score to 7-2.

McKenna Shearer pitched a scoreless 4.2 innings in relief. The freshman struck out five while allowing just a pair of hits.

With 337 punchouts to her name, Pion is second all-time in Albion history. The record is 397, set by Michaela Adams from 2002-05.

Albion concludes the 2022 season with a 10-26 overall mark, 2-14 in the MIAA. The careers of Kacy Rossi, Morgan Deckrow and Olivia Polak potentially come to a close, as the trio has been incredibly important to the rebuilding of the program.
