Game Recap: Baseball |

Baseball wraps up 2022 at Calvin

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – On Friday, the Albion College baseball team's season came to a close following a split with Calvin University. The Britons won the first game before dropping a heartbreaker in the nightcap.

GAME ONE: Albion 6 Calvin 4

A 1-0 Calvin lead was soon erased when Mark Lauro stepped to the plate in the third. Sean Haddlesey and Zac Gray worked back to back two out walks, before Lauro drove in Haddlesey to tie the game at one.

The Britons erupted for four in the fourth. Matt McGann and Chris Marshall singled to lead off the frame. After an error by the Knights, the bases were loaded for Austyn Stephens. The freshman delivered a two-run double, giving Albion the lead while driving in McGann and Marshall.

Two batters later, junior Patrick Merolla laced a two run single for the Brits, giving the visitors a 5-1 lead.

In the sixth, Gabe Mata struck for an RBI double, padding the Albion lead.

Despite two runs by the Knights in the ninth, Albion held on for the win.

Sean Cooper and Scotty Clippert gave the Brits solid performances on the mound, while freshman Brayden Raether earned the save.

GAME TWO: Calvin 3 Albion 2

Albion left 13 runners on base in the nightcap, unable to complete the sweep of Calvin.

McGann ignited the scoring with an RBI single in the first, driving home Gray. Calvin eventually took a 3-1 lead, but the Brits tried to scratch away at the lead.

Gray legged out an infield single in the eighth to drive home Stephens, but could not push the tying run across.

Albion concludes the season 15-24 overall. The games also conclude the Albion careers of Justin Charron and Sean Haddlesey, who have driven in over 80 runs combined, totaled nearly 200 hits and been instrumental to the program.
