Game Recap: Football |

Lovell to see it: QB shines as Brits put up 740 yards

Luke Lovell had a career day, overseeing the football team's 51-2 win.

ALBION – For the second consecutive game, the Albion College football team's offense was dominant, putting up 51 points in a 51-2 victory over Bluffton University. Sophomore quarterback Luke Lovell put up career numbers, completing 20 of 32 passes for 294 yards and a touchdown, giving Albion a spark early on.

The hosts put up 740 yards of total offense – the most since 733 were racked up against Augustana in 2015.

Albion did not punt once all afternoon and converted all eight red zone opportunities.

KEY STATS

With 12 players registering at least one carry, Phillip Jones-Price led the way with 93 yards. He finished the afternoon with 110 all-purpose yards for the Brits.

CJ Weems (82 yards, 5 rec) and Andy Durand (80 yards, 5 rec) led a talented receiving corps. Weems hauled in a touchdown grab as well.

On defense, Jeremiah Major and Stephen Douglas each finished with a team-best six tackles. Conner Smith and Duwayne Legette added five apiece.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Mirroring last weekend, the Brits won the toss and elected to defer, putting their air-tight defense on the field first. Forcing a three and out, Albion scored on their first drive, as Jack Bush found Weems for a 13-yard TD. Jackson Cooney was perfect in PATs, making his first of the day for a 7-0 lead four minutes into the contest.

A turnover gave the Beavers possession at the Albion 20, but the defense and special teams unit came up big, as Bluffton missed a 25-yard field goal.

On the ensuing possession, an injury to Bush called for Lovell to enter the game under center. The sophomore excelled, finding Bailey Edwards over the middle in the back of the end zone for a 14-0 lead late in the first.

Midway through the second, Albion used an 8-play, 70-yard drive to extend its lead to 21-0. Colby Taylor-Browning converted a 3-yard rush to put the Brits up by three scores.

With 6:42 remaining in the half, Cooney converted a 24-yard field goal for a 24-0 lead.

Just before the half, Albion tacked on another touchdown for a 31-0 lead at the break. After a 77-yard touchdown was negated earlier in the drive due to a penalty, the Brits later got those points back off a 10-yard rush by Donovan Wright.

In their first drive of the new half, Cooney extended the lead with another field goal – this one from 21 yards out for a 34-0 lead.

Junior Swiss Army Knife, James Bloomfield, scored on a 15-yard rush midway through the third quarter for his first TD of the season. Building the lead to 41-0, the hosts remained in total control.

Taylor-Browning recorded his second TD of the day – this one a 22-yarder – to start the fourth. Albion's scoring was capped off with a 25-yard field goal off the left foot of Logan Grwinski.

Albion's bid for a second shutout ended late in the fourth, when the Beavers broke through with a safety.

EXTRA YARDAGE

The Beavers mustered just eight first downs compared to Albion's 32.

Albion's defense continues to impress, holding Bluffton to three third down conversions (3-15).

BEURER KNOWS BEST

"Luke played really well … If Jack didn't come back that was probably going to be the guy this year … We're really confident in what Luke can do," said Beurer.

"The second string O-line played almost the entire second half, they scored on every possession they were out there," added Beurer.
