Men's golf has strong outings Sunday, Monday

HOLLAND, Mich. – On a dreary day, the Albion College men's golf team finished sixth at the first MIAA Jamboree of the year, shooting a team total of 334.

Junior Brendan Iatrow shot a team-best score of 77. Coming next for the Britons was freshman Ryan Knitter, who continued his impressive first season with an 81.

Joey Maniaci was next for Albion with a score of 86. Blake Wagner shot a 90 while Ryan Bougie shot a 91.

Justin Cousins recorded a 99 competing as an individual.

For the first time ever, an MIAA school has played a match at Oakland Hills Country Club. This historic venue has played host to six US Opens, three PGA Championships, a Ryder Cup, 17 total majors, and now a dual match between Albion College and Hillsdale College.

The format was singles matchplay between two teams of twelve, with one point per match. Teams were constructed of 5 current players, the head coach, and six alumni from that school who are also members at OHCC.

All six Albion alumni won their matches. Freshman Ryan Knitter made birdie on the 18th hole to clinch his match against Hillsdale's number one player, and seal the team victory for the Britons by a score of 7-5.

"It's just unbelievable. What an experience for our guys to be able to play an actual tournament at this amazing place. The alumni were so great to us and made it a day we'll never forget," said head coach, Jake Maas. "The list of people who get to do what we did is short, and we can't believe we get to be on it. To top it all off, for Ryno to play like he did and beat such a high caliber player to seal the team win as a freshman, there just aren't enough words. He's that guy and we couldn't be more proud of him. He works his tail off and does everything the right way, so to see it pay off on an enormous stage is a moment you dream of."
