Swim and dive back in action at Calvin

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – On Friday against MIAA Competition, the Albion College swim and dive teams fared well. Competing against Calvin and Alma, both teams defeated the Scots but fell to the host school, Knights.

Starting the night off strong, the 200 yard medley relay team of Canon Rose, Andrew Woods, Ethan Boersma and AJ Zako placed third, finishing with a time of 1:40.48.

Junior Kelvin Crone-Willis swam a season-best time in the 1000 yard free. He took third with his time of 10:36.48. Jalen Hung's time of 1:50.10 was good for ninth place in the 200 yard free.

Boersma later swam a 22.73 in the 50 yard free to take fifth. It was a new season-best time for the junior. Also finishing in the top eight was Richard Pifer, finishing in 23.07, good for eighth place.

Owen Schaaf and Caleb Galvan both competed in the 200 yard IM. Schaaf swam a 2:17.55, while Galvan was just behind at 2:25.51.

Zako and Crone-Willis were seventh and eighth in the 100 yard butterfly. Zako swam a 56.28 while Crone-Willis clocked a 56.79.

In the 100 yard free, Boersma finished in 50.70, taking seventh in the event.

Mason Rose's time of 1:00.75 earned him a seventh place finish in the 100 yard backstroke.

Sophomore Evan Steele took fourth in the 500 yard freestyle, touching the wall at 5:24.67. Esteban Sanchez-Sink also placed in the event, taking sixth (5:27.99).

Woods, Hung and Galvan all scored in the 100 yard breaststroke. Woods (1:04.46) and Hung (1:07.39) were fourth and fifth, as Galvan's time of 1:12.41 was good for seventh.

Albion started the evening with a victory, narrowly edging out the Calvin quartet. Alexis Glaser, Mattie Smith, Sage Gettings and Hannah Fathman took first place, clocking in at 1:49.01.

In the 1000 yard free, Bryn Cavanaugh took sixth place, touching the wall at 12:02.53.

Olivia Perfili was the lone Briton to compete in the 200 yard free, finishing at 2:17.87. She also swam the 500 yard free, taking seventh with a time of 6:04.62.

With a time of 24.22, Fathman won the 50 yard free and set a new season-best time. She also won the 100 yard butterfly, clocking in with a time of 59.59 – the only swimmer under a minute.

Gettings and Lauren Bailey both finished in the top eight in the 200 yard IM. Gettings's time of 2:19.14 was good for fourth, as Bailey took eighth with a race of 2:34.61.

Sarah Weissman and Sarah Stone were within points of each other in the 1-meter dive. Weissman won the event, scoring a 1:83.51. Stone placed second with a mark of 181.43. Sophomore Megan Shay was third in the event with a 171.31, as Sarah Kohler's 153.74 was good for fifth.

In the 3-meter dive, Weissman found herself victorious again, winning with a score of 174.98. Stone scored a 154.72, good for third.

Smith swam a new season-low to win the 100 yard breaststroke, finishing with a time of 1:06.66. The junior also placed fifth in the 100 yard free with a time of 56.42.

The Britons saw two women finish in the top five in the 100 yard backstroke. Glaser's season-best 1:04.62 earned the junior a third place finish, while Gettings was fifth (1:07.15).

Freshman Alyssa Glaser was second in the 100 yard breaststroke, clocking in at 1:15.05.

The evening ended with both 400 relay teams taking second.

Tomorrow, both teams will compete at Hillsdale College for a 3 p.m. start.
