Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

MBB advances to championship game in Bluffton tournament

BLUFFTON, Ohio – The Albion College men's basketball team picked up exactly where it left off.

Backed by career-best evenings from Kam Mayes and Marco Lucchesi, the Britons held off Asbury University, 80-75. Both coming off season-best performances, the duo topped their numbers with Mayes dropping 26 points. Lucchesi totaled 20 in the win.

Senior AJ Barden was a force on the boards, bringing down a game-high 13 in the win. He also blocked six shots, one shy of tying an Albion single-game record.

Winners of three straight, the Britons improve to 6-4 overall.

The teams battled throughout the first half, with neither team gaining a lead of more than six points. Trading buckets, leads and ties, Albion ended the period on an 8-2 run to take a 36-30 advantage into the half. Four points by Mayes, along with baskets from Barden and Zak Krueger lifted the Brits to the lead.

Albion came out of the half explosive, building a lead as large as 10 points. The Eagles were ready to cut into the lead, eventually tying the game at 64. With 6:04 on the clock, Mayes and Lucchesi combined for the next six points to aid Albion in extending the lead back to a multiple possession game.

Clinging to a 76-75 lead late, Jaylen Flaniken sank a pair of free throws to push Albion ahead by three. On the ensuing Asbury possession, what appeared to be a game-tying 3-pointer was waived off due to an offensive foul, drawn by Mayes with 9.1 seconds to play. At the other end, Nathan Steinman drained two free throws to give the Brits a five point lead, and ultimately seal the game.

Lucchesi and Mayes were the only Albion players to finish in double figures. He along with Beck Willems recorded three assists each.

Albion will play in the championship contest tomorrow at 7 p.m. versus the winner of the Bluffton / Miami-Hamilton game, currently underway.
