Women's wrestling sends five to National Championships

One sophomore and four freshmen qualified for the NCWWC Nationals

STEVENS POINT, Wis. – Second year as a program. Five National Qualifiers.

In the NCWWC Regional, the Albion College women's wrestling team saw five wrestlers punch their ticket to the National Championship on Saturday afternoon. Freshmen Hannah Palise, Danielle Ruiz, Gabby Motz and Hannah Arledge join sophomore Jayla Oberst at the national stage.

Oberst, a National Qualifier in 2022, finished fourth at 116. The sophomore tech falled her first opponent before suffering a loss. Oberst battled back to win the next match, 5-2 before dropping in the third place bout. Overall, Oberst placed fourth in the region.

At 130, the Britons saw two wrestlers qualify in Arledge and Ruiz. Ruiz finished second in her weight class, knocking off Arledge in her opening bout. Although she fell in the championship match, Ruiz earned a spot at the National Championships. Arledge rebounded from her first loss, grinding out an 8-6 victory to advance to the third place match. Arledge placed fourth overall.

Motz punched her ticket following a 2-2 day at 109. She pinned her first opponent in just 1:14 before dropping her next match. The freshman pinned the next opponent in 2:29, eventually taking fourth at 109.

Palise finished as the runner-up at 136, going 2-1 on the day. She won her first two matches via pins with times of 1:31 and 2:45. Palise fell in the championship match to take second.

Freshman Lynsey Light was seventh overall in the 109 weight class.

The five Britons will compete at the NCWWC Nationals in Cedar Rapids, Iowa beginning on Mar. 3.
