Stellar pitching leads softball to sweep

Ashley Pion and Gabrielle Hirkaway combined to toss 14 scoreless innings.

MYRTLE BEACH, SC – Two incredible performances in the circle helped the Albion College softball team sweep Shawnee State, 1-0 and 2-0. With Ashley Pion and Gabrielle Hirkaway combining to allow just five hits and walking zero hitters, the Brits earned a sweep on Thursday.

GAME ONE: Albion 1 Shawnee State 0

A masterful performance from sophomore Gabrielle Hirkaway led the Britons in game one. Hirkaway (2-0) threw a complete game while allowing just four hits and walking none.

Jacqueline Jozefczyk drove in her second game-winning RBI of the trip with the go-ahead base knock in the fifth. With one out, Lauren Creon doubled down the left field line. Two batters later, Jozefczyk drove in the freshman with a base hit up the middle to put the Brits ahead, 1-0.

Jozefczyk had two of Albion's four hits in the win.

GAME TWO: Albion 2 Shawnee State 0

Courtney Ellis led off the third by reaching on an error and advancing all the way to third. With one out, Lizzie Bissett lifted a sac fly to center, driving in Ellis and giving the Britons a 1-0 advantage.

Albion tacked on an insurance run in the sixth. Bissett hit a leadoff single and moved to second on a sac bunt. Senior Kenadie Baareman came up big with a triple to right center, driving in Bissett to double the Albion lead.

The two runs would be plenty for Ashley Pion (2-2), as she struck out seven while allowing just one hit in the victory.

Albion will play another twinbill in Myrtle Beach on Friday. At noon the Brits will take on Pikeville followed by NVU-Johnson at 2 p.m.
