Pion strikes out 11 at Heidelberg

TIFFIN, Ohio – Resuming play for the first time since Mar. 4, the Albion College softball team fell on a walk off single at Heidelberg University. The Brits rallied to tie the game in the top of the seventh, but the Student Princes pushed across the game-winner in the home half of the frame. 

The second game was suspended in the fourth inning due to rain with the Berg holding a commanding 11-0 edge. 

Heidelberg struck for two runs in the first and another in the third, taking a 3-0 lead after the early innings. The visitors got on the board in the top of the fourth thanks to an RBI single from Dylan Cardinale. Sophomore Parker Douglass doubled to center and was lifted for pinch runner, Hannah Petty. Two batters later, Cardinale's base knock drove home Petty to cut the deficit to two runs. 

Down by two with three outs to play, Albion needed base runners. Courtney Ellis did just that, walking to lead off the seventh and was followed when Lauren Creon reached on an error. With a runner on third, pinch hitter Maddison Shannahan came through with an RBI single to bring the Brits to within one.

Jacqueline Jozefczyk followed with a successful bunt, plating Creon to tie the game up at three. 

In the bottom of the inning, the Student Prices walked it off on an unearned run. 

Ashley Pion (3-4) pitched 6.1 innings, allowing three earned runs while striking out 11. The senior walked none in the contest. 

This weekend, the Britons are scheduled to make a trip back to Ohio when they play at Defiance and Wilmington. Saturday's games at Defiance are at 1 and 3 p.m.
