Softball picks up MIAA split with Adrian

ALBION – Backed by a masterful performance in the circle from Ashley Pion, the Albion College softball team split with Adrian College on Wednesday afternoon. The senior tossed a complete game shutout to lead the Brits in the opener, 4-0, before the Bulldogs answered with a 4-1 win in the nightcap.

GAME ONE: Albion 4 Adrian 0

Kenadie Baareman broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the fourth. Senior Lilly Patillo legged out an infield single before being lifted for pinch runner Rachel Horecki. With two away and Horecki on second, Baareman laced a single to right center field, driving in Horecki for a 1-0 lead.

Albion pushed across three more in the bottom of the fifth. Mya Nummer slapped a single to left and Jacqueline Jozefczyk followed with a single to right. The Adrian right fielder attempted to throw out Nummer at third, however a heads up Jozefczyk advanced to second, putting a pair in scoring position.

Courtney Ellis followed with a two run single to left, giving the Britons a 3-0 advantage. Two batters later, sophomore Parker Douglass smacked a single up the middle, scoring Ellis to cap off the inning.

Pion (6-8) was solid in the circle, allowing just two hits while walking none. The senior struck out nine over seven innings of work.

GAME TWO: Adrian 4 Albion 1

The Bulldogs plated all four of their runs in the third inning – two unearned – capitalizing on Albion miscues. Through three, Adrian held a 4-0 lead over the Brits.

Albion loaded the bases in the fourth inning with nobody out, but could only push across one run. Patillo walked and Douglass singled. Chloe Miller was then plunked, loading the bases for Baareman. The senior drew a bases loaded walk, allowing pinch runner Hannah Petty to cross, cutting into the Adrian lead.

The Bulldogs retired the next three hitters via popouts and a strikeout to limit further damage.

Jozefczyk recorded two of Albion's five hits in the loss.

Gabrielle Hirkaway (3-7) suffered the loss in the circle. The sophomore threw 2.1 innings, allowing three runs – only one earned – while walking one.
