Softball splits with Hope to conclude 2023 season

ALBION – In two pitcher's duels, the Albion College softball team salvaged a split in their 2023 season finale. After dropping a heartbreaking 1-0 game one, the Britons rallied for an extra inning victory over Hope College, 2-1, in the nightcap.

Ashley Pion closes out her phenomenal Albion career, pitching both games on the day. She leaves as Albion's all-time strikeout leader, as well as holding the top three spots for single season strikeout records.

GAME ONE: Hope 1 Albion 0

The Flying Dutch came away victorious, scratching across a run in the top of the third.

Albion's best chance came in the bottom of the sixth, where the Britons loaded the bases with two outs. Singles from Lauren Creon and Megan Maiuri were followed by a walk to Kenadie Baareman

GAME TWO: Albion 2 Hope 1 (8 innings)

Scoreless through five, junior Chloe Miller put the Britons on the board with a sac fly in the top of the sixth. Courtney Ellis led off the inning with a double and Lilly Patillo was hit by a pitch. Following a successful sac bunt off the bat of Kearney Miller, it was the other Miller, Chloe, who drove in Ellis for a 1-0 lead.

Hope rallied in the bottom of the seventh, tying the game at one and sending it to extras.

With the bases loaded and one away in the eighth, Creon lifted a sac fly to left, plating Patillo to push Albion ahead, 2-1.

In the bottom of the eighth, Pion worked around a one out single to retire the next two hitters and send the Brits off with a win.
