Swim and dive knocks off Alma, falls to Hope

HUDSONVILLE, Mich. – Back in the pool after an extended hiatus, the Albion College swimming and diving teams were back in action at a tri-meet with Hope College and Alma College. Both teams defeated the Scots but fell to the Flying Dutchmen.

The men's 400 yard medley relay team kicked things off with a fourth place finish and a time of 3:49.08. Canon Rose, Andrew Woods, Mason Rose and AJ Zako all swam for the Brits. Placing sixth was Albion's B team of Evan Sttele, Owen Schaaf, Jalen Hung and Jacob Hyde (3:58.40).

On the women's side, the quartet of Alexis Glaser, Mattie Smith, Sage Gettings and Hannah Fathman won with a time of 4:06.2.

Junior Kelvin Crone-Willis was third in the men's 1650 yard free, clocking in at 17:51.64. With a time of 18:39.62, Nick Johns finished fifth as Caled Galvan was eighth (20:36.89). In the women's event, senior Bryn Cavanaugh took third with a swim of 19:51.76.

Later in the day, Zako claimed fourth in the 200 yard free (1:54.26). Steele finished seventh with a race of 1:55.43. On the women's side, junior Olivia Perfili placed eighth (2:14.93).

Billy Barr returned for Albion, taking fifth in the 50 yard free (22.55). Mason Rose was seventh, logging a time of 23.28. With a time of 24.91, Fathman won the women's race as Chalondra Jewell took seventh, swimming a 27.49.

Sophomore Jalen Hung's time of 4:30.85 was fourth in the 400 yard IM. Woods swam a 4:47.11, good for seventh in the event. Smith placed second in the women's race, clocking in at 4:59.63.

Sarah Weissman was fourth for Albion in the 1-meter dive, scoring a 181.55. Sarah Kohler was sixth with a 166.05, while Sarah Stone (165.50) and Megan Shay (163.45) followed. Late in the 3-meter dive, Weissman's 172.95 earned her fourth and Stone scored a 167.50 to take fifth.

In the 200 yard fly, Crone-Willis claimed third (2:08.47) as Zako (2:11.09) and Hung (2:11.82) were fifth and sixth. Lauren Bailey was fifth in the women's event with a time of 2:43.98.

Albion saw two in the top eight in the men's 100 yard free – Mason Rose and Jacob Hyde. Rose was fourth (50.47) and Hyde (54.59) was eighth. Fathman remained victorious in the women's race, winning with a rime of 54.96. Gettings finished with a 57.00, good for fourth place.

Steele, Canon Rose and Brennen Curry all finished in the top five in the 200 yard backstroke. Steele's time of 2:09.27 earned him second, while Rose (2:11.77) and Curry (2:15.78) were third and fifth. Alexis Glaser swam a 2:26.78 to earn seventh.

With a swim of 5:27.71, Johns was seventh in the 500 yard free. For the women, Perfili (6:03.28) took sixth and Alyvia Martinez (6:14.99) finished seventh.

In the final individual event of the day, Woods won the men's 200 yard breaststroke with a time of 2:20.26 – winning by nine seconds. Owen Schaaf claimed third place as Caleb Galvan took home fifth. The women were victorious in their event, as Smith won by 12 seconds in a race of 2:31.34. Cavanaugh was second for Albion.

The men's 200 yard free relay won with a race of 1:33.30, composed of Johns, Barr, Ali Dakroub and Canon Rose. The women's team of Jewell, Alexis Glaser, Cavanaugh and Gettings was second.

Next Saturday, the Britons host their first home meet of the year against Aquinas College. The meet is set to begin at 1 p.m.
