Men's soccer earns road MIAA win

ALMA, Mich. – Surviving a late scare, the Albion College men's soccer team earned their first victory of the season, knocking off Alma College 3-2.

All three Albion goals came in the first half. Freshman Pablo Caturla Rubio kicked off the scoring with a beautiful goal in the seventh minute off a pass from Ezekiel Johnson. The Britons padded their lead in the 20th minute, as Jasek Zielaskowski netted his second goal of the season. Zielaskowski was able to finish on a ball through the box from Caturla Rubio.

A pure hustle play led to Albion's final goal of the game. Fifth year Brett Swaton pressured a lackadaisical Alma defense as they played the ball back to gain possession. Swaton fired off a shot that lifted the visitors to a 3-0 lead at halftime.

Alma scored early in the second half, but the Brits held the hosts at bay until the waning minutes. The Scots scored their second goal with just over two minutes remaining.

Freshman goalkeeper Tom Veresh had five saves in the win.

Albion had the advantage in shots (17-14) and corners (6-4).

On Tuesday, the Brits host Adrian College for a 7 p.m. kickoff.
