Softball earns split at Bluffton

BLUFFTON, Ohio – Back in action for the first time in 10 days, the Albion College softball team split at Bluffton University.

GAME ONE: Albion 13 Bluffton 4 (5 innings)

Albion erased an early 4-0 deficit by scoring 13 unanswered runs against the Beavers. In the second, the Brits cut the deficit in half by plating a pair. Jessie Anstandig doubled down the left field line and Lilly Zaskowski followed with a single. With runners at the corners and one out, Parker Douglass drove in Anstandig with a RBI base hit. Three batters later, Jacqueline Jozefczyk singled home the second run.

Four different players recorded RBIs in the top of the third, giving Albion a 6-4 lead. Zaskowski, Douglass, Jozefczyk and Emma Schramm all did damage for Albion, tallying base hits and driving in runs.

With two away in the fourth, Zaskowski scorched her first collegiate home run for an 8-4 advantage. Albion inflated its lead to above the run rule threshold in the top of the fifth inning, striking for five runs.

Jozefczyk and Zaskowski both went 3 for 4 with 3 RBI in the win. Anstandig and Douglass finished with two hits apiece. Zaskowski (7-1) got the win in the circle, settling down after the first inning and limiting Bluffton to four runs.

GAME TWO: Bluffton 5 Albion 2

Bluffton led 5-0 through four innings, before the Briton bats came to life in the top of the fifth. Senior Courtney Ellis doubled to left center and came around to score when Kearney Miller drove her in on a base hit.

Heading into their final at bats, Albion scored once in the top of the seventh but could not push across more runs. With two away, Miller crushed a double to put herself in scoring position for Anstandig. The freshman followed with an extra base hit of her own, driving in Miller for a 5-2 deficit. Bluffton recorded the final out unscathed to salvage the split.

Ellis led Albion with three hits. As a team, the Britons left 10 runners on base.

On Wednesday, the Brits head to Manchester University for a 3 and 5 p.m. doubleheader.
