Softball battles wild weather at Saint Mary's

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – Three weather delays, an incomplete game and Lilly Zaskowski's big blow were the highlights for Thursday's Albion College softball doubleheader. The Britons defeated Saint Mary's College 6-5 in game one, before weather delay after weather delay halted game two.

Albion was trailing 5-3 in the bottom of the seventh inning when the game was officially called. An official word on when the game was completed will be determined tomorrow, as no statistics are official yet.

GAME ONE: Albion 6 Saint Mary's 5

Lilly Zaskowski did damage in the circle, and at the dish, helping the Britons win in dramatic fashion in game one.

Albion took full advantage of a SMC miscue in the second inning. With the bases loaded and two away, senior Courtney Ellis roped a triple to the right center gap, clearing the bases for a 3-0 lead.

After the Belles cut into Albion's lead in the third, the visitors manufactured a run in the top of the fifth. Kearney Miller led off the inning with a double and advanced to third on a passed ball. Zaskowski drove in her first run of the day with a sac fly, bringing in Miller for a 4-2 lead.

Albion added another run in the sixth. Freshman Jessie Anstandig led off the inning with a double and advanced 60 feet on a groundout. Jacqueline Jozefczyk smacked a single through the right side, plating Anstandig for a 3-run lead.

Saint Mary's scored three runs in the home half of the sixth inning, tying the game at five.

Zaskowski smacked the first pitch of the seventh inning over the left centerfield fence for a solo home run, giving Albion a 6-5 lead. She then worked around a leadoff single to give the Britons the win in the opener.

GAME TWO: Saint Mary's 5 Albion 3 (unofficial)

Albion got another RBI double off the bat of Kearney Miller, as her stellar breakout year continued on Thursday. Ellis later drove in Chloe Miller for the second run of game two for the Britons.

Albion got its final run off an error by the Belles.

More details will be finalized tomorrow when it comes to the statistical outcome of the contest.

The Britons will close out the 2024 season at No. 4 Trine University on Sunday. Games are scheduled for 2 and 4 p.m.
