Cross country battles weather, has strong outing

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Back on the course, battling dreary and rainy conditions, the Albion College cross country teams had a good showing at the Knight Invitational. On the women's side, Albion placed fifth out of 10 teams. For the men, the Brits were ninth overall.

The women saw four runners finish in the top 35, led by senior Olivia DeGraaf's 23:55.4, finishing 120h. With a time of 24:23.1, junior Bianca Wiegerink was next, taking 27th overall.
Cassandra Gallagher turned in a 29th place run (24:26.4) and Fatima Cruz followed with a a 24:44.3 to place 33rd.

Serena Arnold finished the day running a 26:25.8, as freshman Sienna Eaton was just behind with a 26:38.2. Sophomore Taylor Adams rounded out the team scoring, clocking a 27:35.1.

Six Albion runners also competed on the women's side – Larayda Warnsley (28:04.2), Kasey Kernen (28:57.0), Veronica Paniccia (29:18.4), Melanie Symons (29:29.8), Megan Chipman (29:54.6) and Kyra Shouldice (33:56.3).

Sophomore Logan Vining led the Britons with a time of 27:33.1, placing 43rd overall. Behind him for the Brits was freshman Karma Evans with a race of 29:58.5 – a new collegiate-best. Ruark Wicka (30:09.5) and Israel Aquino (30:17.7) were the next Albion runners to cross the finish line.

Just behind Wicka and Aquino were Connor Clark (31:08.6) and Alexander Hammond (31:11.7). Dalton Weber clocked a 31:13.6, making him the last Albion runner to score.

Sam VanderWerf, Matt Lathom, Adan Rojas, Fejiro Nakireru, Matt Record and Chris Hernandez all raced as well.

VanderWerf ran a 31:33.5, as Lathom's new PR of 32:28.5 was next. Rojas clocked a 32:43.0, Nakirero a 36:05.2, Record a 37:28.0 and Hernandez a 44:02.6.
